Meningococcal ACYW-135
Meningococcal ACYW-135 Vaccine for Travel
What is Meningococcal ACYW-135?
Meningococcal ACYW-135 refers to a strain of bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis that can cause meningococcal disease. The bacteria can invade the body and cause certain illnesses that are often severe and can be deadly, including infections of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and bloodstream (meningococcal septicemia or meningococcemia).
This particular strain is associated with the serogroups (types of Neisseria meningitidis) A, C, Y, and W-135, which are responsible for a significant number of meningococcal infections worldwide.
How to Prevent Meningococcal ACYW-135?
Prevention of Meningococcal ACYW-135 includes practicing good personal hygiene, such as regular hand washing, and vaccination. Antibiotics to prevent illness (called prophylaxis) may be prescribed if you have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with meningococcal disease.
Is Meningococcal ACYW-135 Vaccine Necessary?
The meningococcal ACYW-135 vaccine is considered one of the most effective methods for preventing meningococcal disease caused by serogroups A, C, Y, and W-135. Vaccination is recommended by healthcare authorities, particularly for individuals at higher risk or those planning to travel to areas with a high incidence of meningococcal disease.
While other preventive measures, such as practicing good hygiene and antibiotic prophylaxis, can help reduce the risk of transmission, the meningococcal vaccine is specifically designed to provide long-term immunity against the targeted strains of the bacteria. The vaccine is required for entry to certain countries (eg. Saudi Arabia for Hajj), and a booster may be required depending on your immunization history.
