A travel medicine consultation involves meeting with a professional with special training in travel medicine. You will receive up-to-date, destination-specific advice concerning current risks and local outbreaks, medications and vaccines that are recommended or required, and they will provide you tips and resources to prevent illness while you are travelling. For high-risk destinations where malaria, yellow fever, or gastrointestinal illnesses are present, it is particularly important to speak with a travel medical professional.
Travel medicine consultations are not covered by provincial health, and therefore must be paid for privately. However, many extended health benefits and insurance providers will cover all or part of the travel consultation.
Unlike most family doctors, Rockdoc’s Travel Medicine Professionals have specific training and qualifications in Travel Medicine. They are up-to-date on outbreaks worldwide, regional guidelines, and recommended vaccines and medications tailored to your travel plans and your medical history. Additionally, most family doctors do not provide this service.
A Rockdoc Travel Medicine Professional must conduct a consultation first. We need to know your medical history, allergies, immunization history, and specific travel itinerary before generating a prescription.
Ideally, your travel medical consultation should take place at least 4 to 6 weeks before travelling. This will ensure vaccinations will have time to build immunity, and certain vaccines require multiple doses at separate time intervals. However, we understand that certain trips may come up at short notice, so we will provide a consultation at any time prior to travelling, and will tailor your personalized travel medicine recommendations based on how much time you have prior to departure.
Rockdoc’s Travel Medicine Professionals will discuss your travel itinerary, planned activities, your medical and immunization history, and conduct a risk assessment to determine which vaccines and/or medications are appropriate for you. Our Travel Medicine Professionals will also provide you with destination-specific education and safety concerns. You will be provided referrals for pharmacies in your area that have the vaccinations/medications you need in stock, and/or arrange for your prescriptions mailed to you, and will send your prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.
There is no minimum age for a travel medicine consultation. In fact, newborns and children may be more susceptible to certain travel-related illnesses.
Yes, some travel vaccines can be given to infants as young as 6 months old. Furthermore, your infant may require certain medications to prevent diseases like malaria. Rockdoc’s Travel Medicine Professionals will also provide important advice regarding infants or children, such as which sunscreens or insect repellants are safe or recommended at a certain age.

Each person traveling in your group will need to schedule a separate Travel Medical Consultation and complete a separate Intake Form. We do not do travel medical consultations with multiple adults at the same time due to the confidential personal health history that is discussed during the consultation.
After booking your travel medicine consultation, you will receive an email with your Intake Form. We request that you have your Intake Form completed at least 24 hours prior to your appointment, so Rockdoc’s Travel Medicine Professionals can provide you with the most accurate and timely information and advice.
If your intake form is not completed 24 hours prior to your appointment time, your appointment will need to be rescheduled. A member of our Customer Success team will reach out to you to reschedule.
The Intake Form asks you for information regarding your destination, dates and duration of travel, and your medical and immunization history. It is helpful to have your vaccine records and list of current medications on hand at your appointment, as this will be reviewed by the Travel Medicine Expert.
If you need assistance completing the electronic Intake Form, please contact our Customer Success team for assistance at 1 (833) 274-9673 or [email protected].
