What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a contagious viral infection that primarily affects the liver and can cause inflammation and damage to the organ. It is commonly transmitted through contaminated food, water, or objects that have been in contact with infected feces.
How to Prevent Hepatitis A?
Prevention of Hepatitis A includes practicing good hygiene such as washing hands thoroughly before eating or handling food, using safe drinking water sources, avoid ice cubes in drinks, not eating unpeeled fruits or vegetables, and to eat foods that are well-cooked.
Is Hepatitis A Vaccine Necessary?
Vaccination is the best preventative measure against Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) transmission for individuals at risk of exposure. Hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for travelers to countries where the disease is prevalent and those with close personal contact with infected individuals. The hepatitis A vaccine, which is given in two doses at least six months apart, with just 1 dose of providing up to 90% effectiveness, and climbs up to over 98% with 2 doses. Vaccination provides long-lasting immunity against the virus and is recommended for all individuals over the age of one.

Is Hepatitis A Serious Disease?
Symptoms of Hepatitis A include:
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
- Loss of appetite
- Dark urine
Hepatitis A symptoms can range from mild to severe, but most individuals recover fully within a few weeks to months and require no treatments.
However, some people may experience prolonged symptoms or life-threatening complications such as liver failure.
